Poetry in Grasmere 2010 - John Agard & Grace Nichols
John Agard & Grace Nichols
Tuesday 12 October
The 2010 Poetry in Grasmere season comes to an end with two of our best-loved poetry performers appearing in Grasmere for the first time.
Born in Guyana, John Agard has been broadening the canvas of British poetry for 30 years with his mischievous fables. His satirical swipes at life in Great Britain both cherish and challenge our peculiar culture and its hallowed institutions. In recent work he has turned his twinkling eye to Darwin and his theories of evolution. John Agard's poetry is direct, political, hilarious and life affirming.

Grace Nichols was also born in Guyana and moved to Britain in 1977. Her poetry combines an awareness of myth, a sensuous musicality and the gritty rhythms of the Caribbean. Her work has wit, acidity and tenderness. Her recent poetry has focused on art, landscape and memory. This year she publishes I Have Crossed an Ocean: Selected Poems, which draws from 25 years of work.
Grace Nichols's collection, I Have Crossed an Ocean: Selected Poems will be discussed at the Wordsworth Trust Poetry Reading Group on Thursday 23 September, 2.30pm - 4.00pm. This is a free event, but booking is essential. Click here for further information.
